Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

Deciding whether to invest in pet insurance can be a tough decision. Pet insurance
might be worth it for pet owners who would spend large amounts of money treating a pet’s medical condition or who do not have the funds readily available for unexpected medical costs. Depending on the type of pet insurance policy chosen, pet owners can realize large savings on medical expenses related to potentially fatal illnesses or accidents. Treatments for critical conditions such as radiation therapy or kidney transplants can easily cost from $1,000 to more than $5,000. It is impossible to predict a fatal illness or accident, but there are some variables to consider that can help a pet owner make an intelligent decision including the pet’s age and personality. For example, young pets are more prone to accidents than adult pets, and just like people, some pets are always getting into trouble.

As a rule of thumb, be prepared to pay between $15 and $80 per month per pet. Insurance costs will vary depending on the animal species (dogs have higher premiums than cats), your location (metropolitan areas have higher premiums than suburbs), the breed of pet (an English bulldog has a higher premium than a poodle and purebreds have higher premiums than mixed breeds), and age (older pets have higher premiums or are not insurable by some companies).

Pet insurance pays the veterinary costs if one’s pet becomes ill or is injured in an accident. Some policies will also pay out when the pet dies, or if it’s lost or stolen.

The purpose of pet insurance is to mitigate the risk of incurring significant expense to treat ill or injured pets. As veterinary medicine is increasingly employing expensive medical techniques and drugs, and owners have higher expectations for their pets’ health care and standard of living than previously, the market for pet insurance has increased.

The consideration of purchasing pet care insurance is important for many families. 63% of American households own a pet, according to the 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association.

You might have guessed that. But could you also have guessed that $21.3 billion of the total national pet expenditure of $43.4 billion (est. 2008) is for vet care and supplies/OTC medicine? That means that nearly half of the cost of a pet is for health care!

2008 US Pet Market
Estimates

Total Expenditure on Pets — $43.4 billion
Supplies/OTC Medicine — $10.3billion
source: National Pet Owners Survey

Should you insure your pet? I would say yes, for two reasons: economics and peace of mind.
Pet insurance could save many financial headaches of unexpected expenses arriving at inconvenient times, and arriving at times when all you want to do is care for your pet, not work extra hours so you can pay for your vet bills. Pet insurance is also preferable over going into debt to cover pet medical costs also, or the option of euthanasia. Insurance allows you to have just one concern: your pet.

Your annual pet insurance premiums could be more modest than yearly routine wellness visits. Pet insurance coverage can cost you realistically anywhere from $2,000 and $6,000 over the lifespan of the pet. It depends a bit on the type of pet and your deductible, but this gives you a rough estimate.
It’s probably a small price to pay.

Pet Health Insurance for:

Surgery
Pre-existing medical conditions
Medications
X-rays
Emergencies

Meanwhile, the world of pet health care has become more costly and sophisticated. The bad news is that expenditure on vet visits increased 8.5% year over year from 2007 to 2008. However, the good news is that once fatal or life-threatening conditions are now treatable. Medical treatments that were once only conducted on people, can now be given to your pet. Consider treatments like radiation therapy or a kidney transplant. Think in the range of $1000-$5000 for a treatment. In addition, medical diagnostic tools such as MRI scans are now enabling early detection and protection from many major future health dramas for your pet. Of course, diagnostic sophistication means a higher pet health check-up bill.

Accidents aside, as your pet ages, your vet bills will go up. Pet insurance help you with these vet charges. It does not matter whether your pet at home is a dog, cat, or a horse, insurance does make sense.

Standard pet health insurance covers basic procedures
plus the cost of pet prescription medicine.

Less than 3% of America’s 71 million pet owners have pet insurance. If that’s you, now is a time to reconsider.

By Francisco Segura

Despite the untold millions of pet owners in the U.S., a huge percentage of them do not have any form of pet insurance; strange when you consider how attached people become to their animals and treating them like family members. Most Americans are quick to arrange their own health insurance; so we should do the same for our pets.

ers face expensive vet bills when they are sick. In the last ten years there have been many areas that have seen price increases and vets are amongst them; what this means is pet insurance companies have been forced to pass on this additional cost.

Pet health cover costs, like many other types of insurance plans, are on the increase; this should really be enough to make you think twice about delaying but this isn’t the only reason. Accidents and serious illnesses occur from time to time; this invariably happens at the worst times, financially.

If you are in this unenviable position then a choice may have to be made; you know that treating your animal will place financial strain on you.

I remember a few years ago when the vet told me that it would cost at least 1,000 dollars to save my dog; the agony of making a decision like that is something I hope not to repeat. To make matters worse, there is always a chance you pet still won’t survive; operations on animals can go wrong sometimes.

The financial aspect of looking after a pet is something that must be considered carefully; when money problems occur, temporary or otherwise, this causes further worries. You may have other pressing financial commitments to attend too so raising further capital can sometimes be a problem.

Ensuring your pet receives the treatment it requires should be every owners aim; this situation can be avoided if a pet insurance policy is set up. Although pet healthcare insurance costs are rising they are not going to break the bank; for around 40 dollars (or Less) per month cost of medical care is assured.

Nearly all pet healthcare policies can be tailor-made to suit individual circumstances; discounts are often available should you decide to place all household pets all on one policy to reduce the monthly cost. Pet owners providing a health plan for their pets is not the luxury you may think it is; perhaps the advice here will help you make the decision you have been agonizing over.

By Ellen Schmidt

A good insurance for keeping and driving a horse is a must. The driving sport is a very hazardous sport: we are dealing with a relatively slow moving vehicle and our “engine” is a rather unpredictable one that might at any time accelerate or change direction without our permission. We are taking part in public traffic and all general traffic rules also apply to us. On the other hand is modern traffic becoming faster and denser, resulting in careless and impatient motorized vehicle drivers. A lot of drivers simply are overwhelmed with the presence of a horse drawn vehicle taking part in traffic and simply do not know how to deal all of a sudden with this new situation: accidents will happen.

Consider the following options for your horse insurance:

Third party liability insurance

This is an absolute must: due to a decision in the Houses of Lords a horse keeper or owner is now liable for any injury or damage that his/her horse causes or does to other people regardless, whether s/he is negligent or not. Check, if this is covered and included in your household insurance policy.

Veterinary fees:

In case of an accident or a disease/medical condition that needs to be investigated more thoroughly, e.g. in a specialized clinic can hit horse owners unforeseen. Medical costs usually grow sky high in a very short time; veterinary examinations and visits, referrals to a clinic, special diagnostics, OP’s and stay over days to weeks in a horse clinic, expensive treatments and drugs etc…and finally a long recovery time, where a horse cannot be used.
It is recommended to insure your horse against:

All Vet Fees

If you get a vet bill, you, the insured, will usually have to pay an excess or a percentage of it and in general the amount of the cover for any particular condition is limited. After a condition was treated it may be excluded from the insurance policy in future years, especially if it is a recurring condition.

Catastrophic Vet Fees

These are veterinary surgeon’s fees up to £5000 (in the UK) per incident.
The premium for this type of insurance is extremely worthwhile. Buying this type of horse insurance might enable you to decide for treatment of your equine friend instead of euthanasia for financial reasons.

Loss of Use

Loss of use is classified into two categories:

Accident or External Injury (=AEI)

Causes other than AEI (e.g. spavin, arthritis, navicular disease)

The premiums for loss of use against AEI are very competitive and therefore worth to consider.

With premiums for loss of use other than AEI it may be difficult to proof facts of a certain condition; insurance companies require usually a full (5- level) vetting certificate at the time of application for a policy.
(And then again, a horse that gets a full vetting certificate will probably also in the near future not suffer from a condition that causes loss of use.)

Mortality Only Insurance

To insure a horse for this sort of cover, the insurer usually requires a 2-level-vetting certificate. To claim for an insurance case it is required that the insured horse suffers from an injury or disease or illness that is so severe that immediate destruction will be necessary to relieve incurable and excessive pain and that at that time no other option of treatment was available. In case that immediate destruction is not a justified option, the veterinary surgeon under whose care the horse is, should provide first-aid treatment, then request to contact the insurance company or, if this would fail, ask for a second opinion from another veterinary surgeon.

Note:

Before purchasing an insurance policy, please get advice from an insurance expert and read carefully the Terms and Conditions of your policy!

Dog insurance providers are homing in on those dog breeds that are generating the highest number of insurance claims to do with dog bites or other insurance claims that can be associated with an act of a dangerous dog. The problem is rapidly increasing with dog insurance issues across the US in an attempt to better cover the insurance risk of what is perceived to be dangerous breeds of dog.

It is not yet clear on what foundation some pet insurance companies are placing their reliance on for establishing what breeds of dog are supposed to be dangerous but what is clear is that there is a continuing trend, with dog insurance providers, towards discriminating against certain breeds of dog.
What will make the issue worse is the possible move towards making dog insurance mandatory at which point dog owners could find themselves either unable to obtain dog insurance or priced out of the dog insurance market but illegally owning their dog if they don’t have dog insurance.

One recommendation is to avoid the dangerous dog breed list when purchasing a dog but this advice is of little help to those devoted dog owners who already own a dog from the ‘taboo’ list and are struggling or are likely to struggle to get affordable dog insurance.

At the end of the day dog insurance should only be there as a safety net in the event that the something might happen. It is in every dog owners interest (supposedly dangerous breed or not), and that of any poor unsuspecting victim of a dog attack, to ensure that dogs are kept in a safe and secure environment, not left unattended with strangers, can’t get out and are muzzled if there is even the remotest chance that they might bite someone while out walking.

It doesn’t need to be said that is the responsibility of dog owners to help reduce the number of insurance claims resulting from a dog attacks, despite what might be considered sometimes unthinking actions by people who are less dog aware. This in turn will help reduce the stigma that is currently growing in regard to dog owners and greatly improve the chances of obtaining affordable dog insurance for all breeds of dog in the future.

If, like so many other devoted pet owners, you’ve decided that pet care insurance is an option you wish to explore to ensure the continued and excellent care of your beloved pet, then you’re undoubtedly wondering how to go about wading through the sea of pet care insurance companies out there. One of the best things you can do to assuage your worry is to learn–with the help your veterinarian, the Internet, and other pet owners,–what the highest rated pet care insurance companies are.

What are the markings of a highest rated pet care insurance company? Many reputable, trustworthy companies have been around for many years-perhaps even before the pet insurance fad got underway. However, as the pet insurance trend continues to grow, the competition could become stiff, with more companies emerging and offering great rates for better services. While there is no official rating system for pet insurance, a simple web search will yield several websites that will allow you to do multiple side by side comparisons of pet insurance companies and plans. Some of these websites also offer pet care insurance clients the opportunity to chime in regarding the quality of the companies they’ve used or are using. You’ll usually find the good, the bad, and the ugly on these sites, and while you can’t trust everything you read on the Internet, a number of good or bad comments regarding a certain company should tip you off as to whether or not you would be making a wise investment.

In the midst of tragedy-be it your beloved dog being hit by a car, your cat being diagnosed with cancer, or your bird eating a poisonous plant-the last thing you need is to be further drained by having to deal with red tape, incompetence, or misleading fine print from a disreputable pet insurance company. Taking the time to find and do business with one of the highest rated pet care insurance companies is insurance unto itself-insurance that allows you to breathe easy and get down to the more important things in life, like spending more quality time with your finned, feathered, or furred family members!
